"Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp were attending the major European technology conference LeWeb in Paris in 2008 and shivering in the cold night; they couldn't get a taxi. They questioned the traditional system and dreamed of using their mobile phone to quickly hail a ride.
Both returned to California, where Camp started developing the idea in his free time. Eventually he convinced Kalanick to join him in his efforts and together they founded UberCab in 2009.
Despite there being many ways of getting from point A to point B, and that included carpooling and other usually informal ways of travelling together, no formal systems existed for ride-sharing up to that point.
