"For the past three hundred years or more, two structures of ownership have dominated economies— namely, for-profit or non-profit. The latter could be organized as corporations, cooperatives, or foundations/trusts. The dominant form in the case of for-profit, generally called firms, consists of some form of limited liability company owned by shareholders. In the case of publicly traded firms, shares can be purchased and sold by anyone in stock markets, subject to the laws of the state/country in which those are incorporated.

          From Sharing to Stewarding
Recently, entrepreneurs have begun reshaping this rather uncomplicated organizational landscape with hybrid forms of for-profit and social ventures, including new ways of structuring ownership within each of these.
Steward ownership is one example of such an attempt. As the name suggests, the aim here is to restructure for-profit ventures to enable protecting and nurturing of firm objectives other than financial profit, including stewardship of social values and the health of the planet."
