Chapter 22 Technology: Means, Outcome, or Trap? (pp. 374 to 390)
"Netflix, co-founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in 1997, has demonstrated adaptability and innovation in the rapidly evolving world of entertainment technology and customer preferences. Netflix has not just been successful at delivering entertainment to its customers, it has also evolved into a major producer of content.
In the Mail, Not the Mall
Netflix began as a DVD rental service, offering a novel mail order rental system that solved the inconvenience of late fees and limited selection that plagued traditional video rental stores such as Blockbuster. Hastings famously cited his own experience of being fined 40 US dollars for a late return of a rented movie, which sparked the idea for Netflix."
