          Karikó began work on "Messenger RNA" in her early 20s in a doctoral program in Hungary. At the time, nobody knew whether this research would be of any value, so much so that the project ran out of funding. As Karikó explains: "The Nobel Prize winner who got it for RNA acknowledges that he never thought that RNA will be ever be a medicine" (Karikó, 2021)."
